So many people asked me about how many solar panels is required to run a house, how to calculate the other parameters when decide to purchase the system. To address some of these questions we decided to write a briefing to encourage newbie to adopt the alternating energy in smart way.

• Charge Controller
How to Select a Solar Panel according to our requirement?
To select solar panels we have to determine our power load first. Below is the example for further illustration.
Consider that we want to run 5 Energy Saver each of 20 watt for 3 hours a day on solar energy.
Number of Energy Saver = 5
Each Energy Saver is of = 20 Watt
Need to run in a day = 3 Hours
Total Watt usage = 5 * 20 * 3 = 300
It means we are going to use 300 Watt daily. Let us say we are going to have complete sunshine 6 hours each day.
300/ 6 = 50 Watt
It means we need 50 Watt Solar Panel to run 5 Energy Saver, each of 20 watt, for 3 hours daily. It is recommended to choose higher value than what we need. It is due to the fact that practically the efficiency cannot be 100% and some of the power must be wasted during charge process.
How much watt a battery can store?
Depending on the storing capacity of the battery we can calculate which battery is suitable for our system.
Let us consider that our daily consumption of power is 300 Watt.
As we know Watt = E * I
300 = 12 * I
I = 300 / 12 = 25 Ampere
It means that we need 25 Ah (Ampere Hour) to use stored energy of 300 Watt for one hour.
Charge controller is used to charge batteries from Solar Panels. Solar panels normal give 15-17 volt, charge controller converts that to 12-14 volt and charges battery. Battery often needs a higher voltage than it already has to charge the battery. Charge controller prevents batteries to be over charged and stops to charge when battery is fully charged. And it will give longer life for battery. You can also use blocking diode instead of charge controller. But there are some negative effects of blocking diodes. If you do not use charge controller and just use a blocking diode, so battery can be over charged and damaged. If you is using big solar panel system so it is better to have an advanced charge controller. That gives you complete statistics of how much volt and ampere it has charged battery. Advanced charge controllers also show you how much ampere is on batteries. The Charge Controllers can automatic disconnect battery if it is going to be empty.
